Toronto City Hall Wedding Guide: Everything You Need to Know Before You Book

At Nordello, we provide professional wedding photography for couples across Toronto, with a specialized focus on civil weddings in downtown Toronto. We understand that a City Hall wedding is about a "Smart Start"—it’s for couples who want a straightforward, affordable way to get married without sacrificing quality. Our goal is to provide you with great photos that capture your day perfectly, so you can focus on the celebration.

Choosing a City Hall ceremony is a practical and chic way to start your life together. It allows you to keep things intimate and budget-friendly. However, "City Hall" in Toronto isn't just one place; it's a collection of options with different vibes, rules, and costs. This guide breaks down the three ways to marry in the heart of the city.

1. Choose Your Aesthetic: The "Big Three" Options

Toronto offers three distinct paths for a civil ceremony. Depending on your style, you might prefer a historic landmark or a modern architectural icon.

2. Old City Hall (60 Queen St. W)

Built in 1889, this Romanesque landmark is for the couple craving "Old World" charm and a historic backdrop.

The Experience: For a flat fee, the City provides the historic former Council Chamber and an official officiant.

The Photography Advantage: Following your ceremony, you are permitted 30 minutes for photography in the grand lobby. The stone staircases and stained glass offer a beautiful, timeless look for your family and couple portraits.

Pro Tip: Dates for Old City Hall are in high demand and open exactly 6 months in advance. Mark your calendar to secure a Thursday slot.

3. New City Hall (100 Queen St. W)

Located on the 3rd Floor of the East Tower, this is the iconic heart of downtown.

The Saturday Option: Run by Ministerial Associates, this is the most flexible choice for couples wanting a weekend wedding.

The Green Roof: Your booking includes access to the Green Roof Podium. It offers a clean, urban vibe with the famous "clamshell" towers in the background—perfect for modern, city-style wedding photos.

4. The "DIY" Alternative: Civic Centre Room Rentals

If you already have a favorite officiant or want total budget control, you can rent a wedding chamber at the North York, Scarborough, or York Civic Centres for a "room only" fee of $136.85.

The Catch: You are responsible for hiring your own licensed officiant to meet you there.

Hidden Gem: Scarborough Civic Centre’s clean, white architecture is a favorite for couples looking for a bright, minimalist aesthetic.

5. The Professional Insider Secrets

Since the ceremonies are short, you want to make the most of your time. Here is our advice for a smooth day:

The "1-Hour Buffer" Rule

Toronto traffic is notoriously unpredictable. Plan to arrive exactly one hour before your ceremony. This buffer ensures you have time to find parking, check in, and handle any last-minute "hiccups" without feeling rushed. We love when our couples are early—it gives us time to get a few relaxed shots before you head inside.

The Osgoode Hall "Luxury Look"

Just a 5-minute walk from City Hall is Osgoode Hall Gardens. It features wrought-iron fences and manicured lawns that look like a classic European garden. Best of all? Outdoor photography is currently permit-free, making it the absolute best way to get a high-end look for your gallery at no extra cost.

The Mini-Reception Pivot

Since you are saving thousands on a traditional banquet hall, take your close family to a nearby restaurant for a celebration lunch or dinner. It makes the day feel like a full wedding event while keeping your guest list and budget under control.

6. Day-of Essentials Checklist

The License: You must purchase an Ontario Marriage License at any municipal office within 90 days of your date.

The Witnesses: Two are required by law. They don't need to be residents, but they must be of legal age (12+ for New City Hall, 16+ for City-run chambers).

Language Requirement: The ceremony is in English. If you need an interpreter, they must be a third party who is not one of the witnesses.

The Ceremony: Most City Hall ceremonies last 12–15 minutes. It is short, sweet, and legally binding!
