Finding an Officiant: Why You Need to Bring Your Own to the Wedding Chamber

At Nordello, we’ve seen it happen: a couple books a beautiful wedding chamber at a Civic Centre, invites their closest family, arrives in their wedding best, and then realizes... there’s no one there to marry them.

One of the most confusing parts of getting married in Toronto is that "booking the room" and "hiring the officiant" are often two separate tasks. To ensure your "Smart Start" goes off without a hitch, here is the breakdown of when an officiant is provided and when you need to bring your own.

The Golden Rule: Location Matters

In Toronto, the rules change depending on which building you choose.

1. New City Hall (100 Queen St. W)

If you book through Ministerial Associates at the "New" City Hall, your officiant is included in the $325 fee. They provide a licensed professional to perform the ceremony and handle the legal paperwork.

2. The Civic Centres (North York, Scarborough, York)

If you book a Wedding Chamber at any of the three Civic Centres, you are booking "Room Only."

  • The Fee: $136.85 covers the 30-minute room rental.

  • The Catch: The City of Toronto does not provide an officiant for these locations. If you show up with just your witnesses, you cannot legally get married.

Why Do You Need to Find Your Own Officiant?

For many Nordello couples, the Civic Centres are the preferred choice because they offer more space (up to 40 guests in North York!) or a specific minimalist aesthetic. However, the "Room Only" policy means you have some homework to do.

You must hire a licensed marriage officiant separately to meet you at the chamber at your scheduled time.

Benefits of Bringing Your Own Officiant:

  1. Personalization: When an officiant is "included" in a package, the ceremony is often a standard script. When you hire your own, you can customize your vows and the "vibe" of the ceremony.

  2. Connection: You get to meet your officiant beforehand. This helps you feel more relaxed on the day of the wedding.

  3. Consistency: If you are planning a post-ceremony photo walk with us, your officiant can even help coordinate the "legal signing" in a way that looks great for the camera.

How to Find a Licensed Officiant in Toronto

You can’t just have a friend perform the ceremony unless they are legally licensed by the Province of Ontario. Here’s how to find the right person:

  • The Official List: Check the Ontario Government’s list of registered marriage officiants.

  • Private Companies: Look for highly-rated local officiant groups who specialize in "elopement" or "civil" styles.

  • Nordello Tip: Look for an officiant who is used to the 30-minute time limit of the Civic Centres. They need to be punctual and efficient to ensure you have time for photos!

The Nordello Photography Perspective

From our side of the lens, having your own officiant can actually be an advantage. We’ve worked with many fantastic local officiants who know exactly where to stand so they don't block your "first kiss" photo and who know how to step aside during the ring exchange so the focus remains entirely on you.

Don't Forget the Legal Requirements:

Even if you find the perfect officiant, they cannot marry you unless you have:

  1. A valid Ontario Marriage Licence (issued within the last 90 days).

  2. Two Witnesses (who must stay for the entire ceremony and signing).

Secure Your Smart Start

A City Hall or Civic Centre wedding is a smart, chic, and affordable way to start your life together—but it only works if you have someone to make it legal!
