Booking the Wedding Chambers: The Difference Between City Hall and the Civic Centres

At Nordello, we photographed a high volume of civil ceremonies across the GTA in 2026. One of the most common questions we get from couples is: "What is the difference between booking the downtown City Hall chambers and a Civic Centre chamber?"

While they both fall under the "City wedding" umbrella, the booking process, the price, and the photography aesthetic are vastly different. Here is everything you need to know to decide which venue is right for your "Smart Start."

1. Toronto City Hall (The Managed Experience)

When you book at 100 Queen St. W, you are booking through a private company called Ministerial Associates. This is the "plug-and-play" option for couples who want simplicity.

  • Location: 3rd Floor, East Tower (overlooking the Green Roof).

  • Cost: $325.00 + HST (approx. $367.25 total).

  • What’s Included: The chamber rental and the wedding officiant.

  • The Vibe: Modern, iconic, and efficient. Because an officiant is included, you don't have to spend time vetting and hiring one separately.

  • Photography Edge: You get immediate access to the Green Roof Podium and Nathan Phillips Square. It’s the quintessential "Toronto" look.

2. The Civic Centres (The "Room-Only" DIY Option)

If you are looking for more control or a specific aesthetic outside of downtown, the City of Toronto offers three Civic Centre chambers. These are "room-only" rentals.

  • Locations: North York, Scarborough, and York Civic Centres.

  • Cost: $136.85 (including HST) for a 30-minute block.

  • What’s NOT Included: A marriage officiant. You must hire your own.

  • The Vibe: These spaces offer more variety in architecture and guest capacity.

The Civic Centre Breakdown:

Location

Capacity

The Aesthetic Highlight

North York (5100 Yonge St.)

40 People

Large, bright, and modern. Great for bigger "micro" weddings.

Scarborough (150 Borough Dr.)

22 People

Stunning, white, minimalist architecture that looks amazing in photos.

York (2700 Eglinton Ave. W)

25 People

Quiet, intimate, and often easier to book on short notice.

Which One Should You Choose?

Choose New City Hall If:

You want a Saturday wedding (Civic Centres are primarily weekday-focused).

You want a "one-stop shop" where the officiant is already provided.

You love the urban, architectural look of the downtown core.

Choose a Civic Centre If:

You have a specific officiant you’ve already hired.

You are on a strict budget (even with a private officiant fee, the $136 room rental is the most affordable route).

You want to avoid the 2026 downtown traffic and prefer an "uptown" or "east-end" celebration.

The Nordello Photography Perspective

From a photography standpoint, the location you choose dictates the "story" of your day.

At City Hall: We focus on the high-contrast, modern architecture and the energy of the downtown core.

At Scarborough Civic Centre: We lean into the bright, white lines of the building for a high-fashion, minimalist gallery.

At North York: We utilize the nearby Mel Lastman Square for greenery and urban textures.

Expert Tip: Don't Forget the Sound!

If you book a Civic Centre chamber, remember that you are responsible for your own music. Most chambers provide a sound system with an audio cable, but you’ll need to bring your own device (and a lightning/USB-C adapter for 2026 phones!) and someone to hit "play."
